Classic Cars of the Fifties

Considering the limited technology at the time, the Ford Skyliner was an impressive engineering feat. When electrically activated, the retractable hardtop roof moved up, back, and down into the trunk via hydraulic motors, lift jacks, and an array of no less than ten solenoids.
Debuting two years earlier on the Fairlane platform, the Ford Skyliner became part of the Galaxie line in 1959, carrying both Fairlane 500 and Galaxie badging.
The Skyliner differed from other models by having a standard V-8, and it's gas tank relocated behind the rear seat. The last of three years in production, 1959 saw 12,915 Skyliners sold.
