Classic CarHistory

1999 Ford Mustang

The 1999 Ford Mustang introduced New Edge styling, a 260 hp GT and a 320 hp SVT Cobra with the first independent rear suspension.

Overview

The 1999 Ford Mustang introduced the “New Edge” restyle and celebrated the Mustang’s 35th anniversary. Replacing the rounded look of the 1998 Ford Mustang, the new design used sharper body creases, larger wheel arches and more angular lights, while keeping the SN-95 platform underneath.

Every engine gained power. The base 3.8-liter V6 received split-port induction and rose to about 190 horsepower. The GT’s 4.6-liter SOHC V8 got improved cylinder heads and was rated at about 260 horsepower, a big jump from 225. The SVT Cobra’s 4.6-liter DOHC V8 was rated at about 320 horsepower.

The 1999 SVT Cobra also made history as the first Mustang with a standard independent rear suspension. All models except the Cobra wore 35th Anniversary badges on the front fenders, and a GT Limited Edition package added special trim, with 2,318 coupes and 2,310 convertibles built.

Production totaled 133,637 cars. With its fresh New Edge styling, stronger engines and anniversary details, the 1999 Mustang began a new chapter for the fourth generation. For more background, see the fourth-generation Mustang history, or look back 35 years to the 1965 Ford Mustang.

Buyer’s guide highlights

  • Check the floors, rear frame rails, rocker panels and strut towers for rust and accident damage.
  • Verify a claimed SVT Cobra or GT Limited Edition with documentation.
  • On 1999 Cobras, confirm the engine was updated if the car was part of the power recall.
  • Listen for timing chain noise and check the intake manifold on 4.6-liter V8s.
  • Check the 35th Anniversary fender badges and trim.
  • Buy on condition and originality, since many New Edge cars have been modified.

1. Check for Rust and Accident Damage

Look at the floors, rear frame rails, rocker panels and strut towers of any 1999 Ford Mustang, and check for signs of accident repair.

2. Authenticate the SVT Cobra

The 1999 Cobra was the first Mustang with independent rear suspension. Check the SVT paperwork, DOHC engine and suspension.

3. Check the Engine

Listen for timing chain noise on 4.6-liter V8s and check for coolant leaks around the intake manifold.

4. Look for Anniversary Details

Most 1999 cars wear 35th Anniversary badges, and Limited Edition GTs have extra trim. Make sure these parts are original.

5. Buy the Best Example You Can

Original, well-documented New Edge cars are becoming more collectible and usually hold their value best.
