Overview
The 2003 Ford Mustang was one of the most exciting years of the New Edge era, thanks to two headline models: the supercharged SVT Cobra, nicknamed the “Terminator,” and the retro-styled Mach 1. They joined the V6 and GT that carried over from the 2002 Ford Mustang.
The SVT Cobra used a supercharged 4.6-liter DOHC V8 rated at about 390 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque, backed by a six-speed manual and independent rear suspension. It also received more aggressive front and rear fascias and better-bolstered seats. SVT built 8,394 Cobra coupes and 5,082 convertibles for 2003.
The Mach 1 revived a classic name with a 4.6-liter DOHC V8 rated at about 305 horsepower, a functional “Shaker” hood scoop and Magnum 500-style wheels, giving it a strong link to the original 1969 Mach 1. Ford also offered a Centennial package to celebrate the company’s 100th anniversary, with black paint, premium leather and special badges.
With the Terminator Cobra, the Mach 1 and the Centennial edition, 2003 is a favorite year for modern Mustang collectors. For more background, see the fourth-generation Mustang history, or compare it with the original 1969 Ford Mustang, home of the first Mach 1.

Buyer’s guide highlights
- Check the floors, rear frame rails, rocker panels and strut towers for rust and accident damage.
- Verify a claimed SVT Cobra or Mach 1 with documentation, since both are often copied.
- Check Cobra supercharger, intercooler and clutch condition, and ask for maintenance records.
- Confirm Mach 1 parts such as the Shaker scoop and Magnum 500-style wheels.
- Inspect convertible tops, seals and floors for leaks.
- Buy on condition and originality, since many Terminator Cobras have been modified.
1. Check for Rust and Accident Damage
Look at the floors, rear frame rails, rocker panels and strut towers of any 2003 Ford Mustang, and check for signs of accident repair.
2. Authenticate the SVT Cobra
The Terminator Cobra is the most sought-after 2003 model. Check the VIN, SVT paperwork, supercharger and six-speed transmission. Many cars have been modified for more boost, so ask about any changes.
3. Authenticate the Mach 1
Confirm the DOHC engine, functional Shaker scoop and Mach 1 trim, and check for documentation.
4. Check the Drivetrain
Test the clutch, transmission and rear axle, and listen for supercharger or timing chain noise.
5. Buy the Best Example You Can
Stock, documented Cobras and Mach 1s bring the best prices and are the best long-term buys.
