Overview
The 2000 Ford Mustang carried over the New Edge styling introduced with the 1999 Ford Mustang, and it proved to be one of the best-selling years of the fourth generation. The lineup included the V6 and GT in coupe and convertible form, but there was no regular SVT Cobra for 2000.
The 3.8-liter V6 continued at about 190 horsepower, and the GT’s 4.6-liter SOHC V8 remained at about 260 horsepower. Ford also offered a Spring Feature Edition on GT models in six colors, with 3,091 built.
In place of the regular Cobra, SVT built the extreme 2000 Cobra R. It used a 5.4-liter DOHC four-valve V8 rated at about 385 horsepower, a six-speed manual transmission, a tall front splitter and a large rear wing. Only 300 were built, all in red, and they were priced at around $55,000, making it one of the most collectible modern Mustangs.
Total production jumped to 215,239 cars, almost 82,000 more than 1999, led by the V6 coupe. For buyers today, the 2000 Mustang offers New Edge styling at a low price, while the Cobra R is a true collector car. For more background, see the fourth-generation Mustang history, or compare it with the classic 1967 Ford Mustang.

Buyer’s guide highlights
- Check the floors, rear frame rails, rocker panels and strut towers for rust and accident damage.
- Verify a claimed Cobra R with SVT documentation, since only 300 were built.
- Confirm the engine with the VIN code, since many V6 cars have been dressed up as GTs.
- Listen for timing chain noise and check the intake manifold on 4.6-liter V8s.
- Inspect convertible tops, seals and floors for leaks.
- Buy on condition and originality, since many New Edge cars have been modified.
1. Check for Rust and Accident Damage
Look at the floors, rear frame rails, rocker panels and strut towers of any 2000 Ford Mustang, and check for signs of accident repair.
2. Authenticate the Cobra R
Only 300 Cobra Rs were built. Check the VIN, SVT paperwork, 5.4-liter engine, six-speed transmission and unique body parts.
3. Confirm GT and V6 Models
Check the VIN engine code, as many V6 cars have been fitted with GT parts.
4. Check the Engine and Drivetrain
Listen for timing chain noise on the 4.6-liter V8, check for intake manifold leaks and test the transmission and clutch.
5. Buy the Best Example You Can
Clean, original cars are becoming harder to find and usually hold their value best.
Values
2000 Ford Mustang values are modest for V6 and GT models, while documented Cobra R cars are rare collector vehicles that command strong prices.
Market references are research guides, not appraisals. Actual value depends on condition, originality, documentation, drivetrain, options, location and current buyer demand.
